Đã 16 năm trôi qua kể từ lần đầu tiên Mariah Carey giành danh hiệu Nghệ sĩ mới xuất sắc (1990). Tuy không được làm chủ nhân của Grammy nhiều lần, cô vẫn là một trong những ca sĩ thành công nhất trong lịch sử âm nhạc. Trong danh sách công bố sớm, cô đã giành được giải Album nhạc R&B đương đại xuất sắc (cho The Emancipation of Mimi), Ca khúc R&B xuất sắc và Nữ ca sĩ biểu diễn R&B xuất sắc cho bài We Belong Together.
Với cơ hội giành thêm 4 danh hiệu nữa, Mariah có thể trở thành nữ ca sĩ đầu tiên giành được 6 hoặc 7 cỗ máy đĩa hát vàng chỉ trong một đêm. Norah Jones, Beyonce, Alicia keys và Lauryn Hill từng giành được 5 giải.
