A significant part of "Beatlemania" will hit the auction block when John Lennon's long lost guitar goes up for sale in November, as part of Julien's Auctions Icons & Idols Rock N Roll event.
The Gibson J-160-E acoustic guitar, considered to be one of Lennon's favorites, was used on many of the Beatles early recordings.
Andy Babiuk, author of the book, "Beatles Gear - All The Fab Four's Instruments From Stage To Studio," explains.
"He used this guitar not only in the studio but he used it live for a lot of live shows, Beatles shows, as well as writing a lot of songs. So, he and McCartney would sit in hotel rooms and they wrote songs like 'She Loves You,' 'I Want to Hold Your Hand.'"
Unfortunately, the guitar went missing after one of the "Fab Four's" shows at the end of 1963 and remained so for 50 years. That is until Babiuk received a random call about a missing Beatles' guitar.
"A fellow by the name of John McCaw contacted me and sent me pictures of his Gibson J-160E thinking it might be John Lennon's lost guitar that's been lost for 50 years and lo and behold it was the real guitar. We were able to match the wood grain and with all the research that I had done in my book. It was just a really big find."
The guitar, which Lennon used to write hits like "She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "All My Loving," has never been modified in any way or refinished.
Babiuk, who also runs a vintage guitar store in upstate New York expects the guitar to fetch between 600,000 - 800,000 dollars.
The two-day sale will take place at Julien's Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery on November 6th and 7th.
